Checchino is a treasure, not in the least bit hidden. It’s full of locals and tourists, in equal measure.
To begin with the owners, now in their fifth and sixth generation operating thus osteria and restaurant, really do have hospitality in their blood. More than that, they have a pride in whey’ve build over 150 years and what they provide today. And you feel it every moment - from welcome to after dessert as you wobble out to your ride home.
The menu is, itself, reflective of the neighborhood, including the nearby former slaughterhouse. Meat-focused, with lots of offal, with an incredible selection of wines developed and maintained by the super-knowledgeable owner, who’s also the sommelier. We let him sort out what we’d drink with dinner because the winemakers (and grapes) were often unfamiliar. Great call! The menu is full of classics, but you shouldn’t miss out on the head cheese and garafolato - good luck having either elsewhere, and hardly a chance of them prepared nearly as well.
We ate at a lot of wonderful places all around Italy. Checchino is a very special one.
For all of you guys visiting Rome i highly suggest this place. There are no words to describe the amazing experience we lived here. Perfect home made food, amazing service and wonderful people. Please come here to taste and live the real italian vibes!
We enjoyed a really wonderful evening and dinner here. I loved that this is clearly a restaurant run by a family with an old fashioned vibe in a good way - very correct, attentive and sincere way of hospitality. We enjoyed a beautiful range of typical dishes, all prepared with care. Thank you for taking such good and welcoming care of us - we were tourists, but you treated us as if we were regulars! All the best for other generations to come! I am happy we had the chance to enjoy this place!!!!
We enjoyed this place!
Had a cozy dinner with cheese tasting, wine and pasta. Our questions and preferences were addressed nicely and well explained. Must visit 😊
Very old traditional Roman restaurant with traditional, over 100 year odl recipies that are not common today. Intestine pasta, liver, sweetbread, testicles - you can eat here as well as some common dishes as carbonara or amatriciana. Waiters pleasant, they do take reservations.
Amazing food and the service was super nice and friendly! Loved being able to try different dishes we normally don’t eat!! Plus the lemon cordial is now a new obsession for me!
Excellent meal served by a kind and attentive staff. While we knew what to expect and the place most definitely did not disappoint, the real surprise were the cocktails - creative, well balanced and expertly mixed. All in all definitely a meal experience that is worth repeating over and over again
Absolutely lovely staff. My husband and I came in during our honeymoon and sat at the cocktail bar upstairs. We had the best experience! Simone curated such a genius and special concept in their speakeasy space with the perfumery inspired cocktail menu. Can’t wait to come back one day!
